Our fourth week at St. Martin de Porres, Avondale Heights with Grades 3 and 4 students demonstrated compassion and empathy amongst the students.
One child said its good to “care for other people even if they are not like you”. A lot was experienced through role plays of scenarios of race-based discrimination where the different roles of bystander/witness, person/people responsible and the target were shared in a supported environment. The team also shared their own personal stories of race-based discrimination and the children got to ask questions about the impact of those situations. We collectively identified ways in which people are different and similar and one child when asked “what is one of the ways that we as humans are joined together”, answered “through love”. Enough said.
